What is the exam pattern of JEE?

COMMENTS

The exam pattern of JEE is divided into two stages: JEE Main and JEE Advanced, and understanding both is essential for effective preparation.

JEE Main 2026 is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in a computer-based mode and consists of three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each subject has two sections – Section A contains multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and Section B contains numerical value questions. A total of 90 questions are asked in the paper, out of which students have to attempt 75 questions – 25 from each subject. The total marks are 300. For each correct answer, 4 marks are awarded, and for each incorrect MCQ, 1 mark is deducted. There is no negative marking in numerical questions in Section B. The exam duration is 3 hours, and the paper is available in multiple languages including Hindi, English, and regional languages.

JEE Advanced 2026, conducted by one of the IITs under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB), is known for its unpredictable pattern that changes slightly every year. It consists of two compulsory papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2, each of 3 hours. Both papers test Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics and contain a mix of MCQs, numerical value questions, and match-the-following types. The marking scheme varies and may include full, partial, and negative marking, making it more analytical and challenging than JEE Main. The exam is held only in a computer-based mode, and candidates must appear for both papers to be considered for ranking.

Knowing the detailed exam structure helps students focus on time management, accuracy, and prioritizing high-weightage topics. Since the JEE exam pattern may undergo minor changes, it's important to regularly check official updates on jeemain.nta.ac.in and jeeadv.ac.in.
