According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's report from November 2023, a quarter of India's land is currently experiencing desertification. The Space Applications Centre (SAC) of ISRO found that in 2018-2019, nearly 97.84 million hectares of land in India were either degraded or becoming desertified. The UNCCD also estimates that from 2015 to 2019, India lost around 30.51 million hectares of land to degradation, which is about 9.45% of the nation's total land area.
