What is the exam pattern and marking scheme in CUET?

The CUET UG 2026 exam pattern and marking scheme are structured to test a student’s academic knowledge, language proficiency, and general aptitude in a computer-based format. The exam is divided into three main sections – Language Test, Domain-Specific Subjects, and the General Test. Each section is treated as a separate paper, and candidates can choose a maximum of five test papers depending on the requirements of the universities and courses they are applying to.

Each paper consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, and all questions are compulsory. The total duration for each paper is 60 minutes, and candidates must complete all questions within this time limit. The structure is designed to ensure students manage their time effectively while maintaining accuracy.

The marking scheme is straightforward. For every correct answer, a student is awarded 5 marks. For every incorrect answer, 1 mark is deducted as negative marking. If a question is left unanswered, no marks are awarded or deducted. In cases where a question is dropped or canceled by NTA due to any reason, full marks – that is, 5 marks – are awarded to all candidates who attempted the question, regardless of their selected answer.

The maximum score for each paper is 250 marks. If a student appears for five papers, the combined total will be 1250 marks. Since the exam is conducted in multiple shifts and sessions, NTA uses a normalization process to ensure fairness and consistency in scoring.

The Language Test assesses reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and verbal ability in a language of your choice – including English, Hindi, and several regional languages. The Domain-Specific Subjects test your knowledge based on the NCERT syllabus of Class 11 and 12, which gives JEE aspirants an added advantage in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The General Test includes questions from General Knowledge, Current Affairs, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Numerical Ability.

It’s important for aspirants to understand that all 50 questions are mandatory in CUET UG 2026, as there are no optional questions this time. This makes accuracy and time management critical for scoring high. By following the right preparation strategy and regularly practicing mock tests under timed conditions, students can perform confidently and effectively across all sections of the CUET exam.
