Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains is an engineering entrance examination conducted for admission to various engineering colleges in India. It is organized by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

JEE Mains score is used for admission to NITs, IIITs, CFTIs, & other Engineering institutions across India except IITs & ISM Dhanbad. 75% of the total seats in each course at these institutions are reserved for candidates who qualify JEE Mains. The remaining 25% seats are open to all irrespective of whether they have appeared for JEE Mains or not through a process called Direct Admission of Students Abroad scheme (DASA).

➤ Eligibility Criteria for JEE Main

To be eligible to appear in JEE Mains, candidates must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Candidates must have passed 10+2 examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one optional subject from Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or any technical vocational subject.
  • Candidates must have obtained a minimum of 45% marks (40% in case of SC/ST/PWD category candidates) in the above mentioned subjects taken together.
  • Candidates who are appearing in their 10+2 qualifying examination in 2019 can also apply but they must produce proof of having passed the qualifying examination with required percentile on or before 31st December 2019 when asked by the concerned authority at the time of counselling/admission process.
  • There is no age limit criterion set by NTA to appear in JEE Mains however most institutes offering engineering courses consider only those candidates who are below 25 years of age on October 1st of the year of admission as eligible applicants.

➤ Exam Pattern

Paper 1: Paper 1 will consist of objective type questions from Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics sections . All questions will be compulsory. This paper will be held in two shifts on different days. Shift I – 09:30 AM – 12:30 PM & Shift II – 02:30 PM – 05:30 PM. 4 marks will be awarded for each correct answer while -1 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer. No mark will be deducted if no answer is marked.

Paper 2: Paper 2 will consist objective type as well as subjective type questions from Aptitude Test & Drawing Test sections. Mathematics section will contain only objective type questions while Aptitude Test & Drawing Test sections will have both types i.e., objective as well as subjective questions. This paper will only be held in Shift I i.e., 09:30 AM – 12:30 PM. 4 marks will be awarded for each correct answer in objective type questions section while 2 marks will be given for each correct answer in subjective type questions section. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers in subjective type questions.

Candidates have to attempt Paper 1 & Paper 2 as per the course they are applying for admission. Both papers are compulsory for candidates seeking admission to B.Arch/B.Planning courses while Paper 1 is compulsory for candidates seeking admission to B.E./B.Tech courses and only Paper 2 is optional for them.

➤ Benefits of Qualifying JEE Main

JEE Mains score is used by various engineering colleges across India (except IITs & ISM Dhanbad) for admitting students to their engineering courses. Admission to NITs, IIITs, CFTIs and other government & private engineering colleges is done on the basis of All India Rank (AIR) secured by a candidate in JEE Mains followed by JoSAA counselling conducted by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).

Qualifying JEE Mains also allows candidates to apply & appear in Advanced examination which is conducted by IITs for providing admissions into their undergraduate programs leading to Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s or Bachelor-Master Dual Degree in Engineering, Sciences or Architecture.
